Frequently asked questions

Common questions about equine-assisted counseling with hUMBLE Equine Therapy.

Understanding equine-assisted therapy

What is equine-assisted therapy?

At hUMBLE Equine Therapy, it is professional counseling that incorporates horses, offered in a safe atmosphere built on trust. Treatment plan goals mirror those of traditional counseling.

How can horses be incorporated into counseling?

Horses are sensitive to non-verbal communication and stay balanced in the present moment. Building mutual trust with such a large, powerful animal can help with building or restoring healthy communication skills and boundaries.

What happens during an equine therapy session?

Every session includes setting goals with the therapist and establishing a relationship with the horses on the ground. Activities are based on the objectives of the session and the needs of the client and the horses.

Do I need previous horse experience?

No previous horse experience is required. Sessions begin on the ground, and activities follow your treatment plan.

Do sessions require horseback riding?

No. Riding is not required. Sessions focus on building a relationship with the horses on the ground; mounted work is only used where it fits the treatment plan.

How is equine-assisted counseling different from traditional office-based counseling?

The goals are the same as traditional counseling, but sessions take place outdoors with horses. The horses and spacious natural surroundings become part of the work, encouraging mindfulness, emotional awareness, and connection.

The hUMBLE approach

What does hUMBLE stand for?

Horses Utilizing, Mindfulness, Balance, and Logos in the Environment.

What role do mindfulness and the natural environment play?

Mindfulness means bringing attention to the present moment without judgment, and horses are natural examples of it. Being outside bestows a sense of connectedness; spacious outdoor surroundings promote mindfulness, gratitude, and humility.

What is the role of horses in communication, boundaries, and awareness?

Effective communication with a horse requires emotional awareness and regulation. Those skills, built through mutual trust and respect, can then be used in other relationships.

How are session goals established?

Every session consists of setting goals with the therapist, guided by the client's treatment plan.

Is each session tailored to the individual?

Yes. Each session is an organic process tailored to each client, the horses, and the goals of the session.

Safety, accessibility, and expectations

What safety considerations apply when working around horses?

Are activities adapted to individual needs and circumstances?

Yes. Activities are based on the objectives of each session and the needs of the client and the horses.

What is the difference between counseling and general equestrian activities?

hUMBLE Therapy is professional counseling with treatment plan goals; it is not riding lessons. Windmill Stables offers its own equestrian services separately.

Can equine-assisted counseling be combined with other forms of care?

The hUMBLE approach is designed so its principles can be incorporated into other treatment modalities and settings. It is not a replacement for medical or emergency care.
